US sitcom It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia has become known for format-busting episodes, with its 12th season already boasting a musical parody. Now, the FX show is moving into the digital realm, with a VR mini-episode.

The four-minute virtual reality short, called ‘Project Badass’, was produced along with VR company Jaunt, depicts ‘The Gang’ taking part in an Evel Knievel-style motorcycle stunt involving a jump off a pier.

The video places the viewer on the motorcycle with Mac, the character performing the stunt, and sees other cast members teasing him before it concludes with the jump. The VR ‘minisode’ is designed to support the latest full episode of the show, which features a VR-based storyline.

The video is an irreverent approach to virtual reality, typical of the show’s tone, and features Frank, played by Danny DeVito, attempting to place a bag over the viewer’s head so they don’t view their own death during the stunt.

Viewers with virtual reality headsets including the Oculus, Samsung’s Gear V and Google Cardboard can watch the video in full VR, and the mini-episode is also available on FX’s website and on YouTube as a 360-degree video.
